ALLERGY HOME MAKEOVER- MERCIA’S PICK ON HOW TO SPEND PRIZE MONEY IF YOU WIN THE ZYRTEC SWEEPSTAKES
AIR PURIFIER
If you have very bad allergies or asthma there is nothing like an IQAir Air Purifier to keep you or your family safe and feeling healthy. The runner up would be a BlueAir which has an advantage of ease of use and quietness. I use both in my home.
DUST MITE COVERS
I do not need to use dust mite covers any more because I sleep on a latex bed and pillow but before that I used Cotton Fresh dust mite encasings and loved their silky feel. White Mountain dust mite covers are a more recent addition to our web site and the pore size protection is excellent.
GOOD MATTRESS
A recent guest to my home could not get over the bliss of sleeping in a Royal Pedic Mattress which is allergen resistant as well as giving wonderful back support. I would recommend the Royal Pedic Quilt Top or Latex mattress with separate pillow top for a slightly softer but luxurious feel. Think about it, you spend 8 hours a night in your bed which is far less than your car. If you buy one of these beds you will be spoilt forever, so great way to spend prize money.
HYPOALLERGENIC PILLOW
You need a good hypoallergenic pillow. My favorites are the Latex soft pillows because they last for years and the soft is nice and squishy .Latex is dust mite resistant. For the ultimate in down pillows the Hypodown while expensive protects you from feather allergies although you will still need a dust mite encasing. My husband, the resident prince loves these!
ALLERGY FREE DOWN COMFORTER
I am of the age where I get too warm at night, so my favorite hypoallergenic comforters are the silk comforters in summer or the Euphoria wool fall weight. Both are very breathable textiles and are moderately priced. If you are the kind of person who wants to disappear under a puff of down, then the Pearl Crescent Hypodown is a wonderful comforter for people with feather allergies. Do not buy winter weight or over sized as even the most cold blooded will roast!
WATER FILTER
A Doulton water purifier is a first class product for straightforward water purification and for the ultimate in healthy alkaline water which I have in my home, consider a Life Ionizer.
VACUUM CLEANER
No home with an allergy sufferer would be complete without a good Hepa vacuum to suck up the allergens. Any of the Mieles does nicely but avoid the 200 series under $500 .Spring for one of the better canister like the Miele Capricorn or Callisto. The new Miele upright vacuums are just awesome for upright fans.
STEAM CLEANER
For chemical free cleaning I am a great fan of the LadyBug steam cleaner series with TANCS for the ultimate in disinfection .The Pronto by Reliable is a wonderful adjunct handheld steam cleaner for quick pick ups and spot removal. Can’t say enough about these two products- top notch.
HUMIDIFIER
For help with sinus pain and better breathing in winter treat yourself to an Air-O-Swiss humidifier in your bedroom. Any of their models will do a fine job and they are reliable and no problems with dispersing germs into the air .They have got that covered. They have the lowest return rate of any humidifier we sell so that tells you something.
SINUS IRRIGATOR
If you are beset with miserable sinus headaches in winter the Grossan HydroPulse or SinuPulse Irrigators will take you out of our agony instantly. The process is not pretty but it does the trick.
CLEANING MATERIALS AND DUST MITE CONTROL
I use Leo’s Soap to do my laundry as my husband has very sensitive skin. The laundry dust mite additive by Allersearch is a wonderful product if you are fighting dust mites and the Bissel powder for carpets stops them cold in their tracks; I have viewed dust mites just keel over and die under a microscope with this product I keep both .DragonFly and Eco Discoveries cleaning materials in our cleaning closet but the Eco Discoveries lasts longer and has no odor at all.
FURNACE FILTER
Hands down the winner here is BlueAir furnace filter with new revolutionary technology. It is the poor man’s central air purifier and does a great job with forced hot air systems .A must have on your list. I believe in stopping allergens from even coming into our homse and deterring them from recycling the indoor ones. Kudos to BlueAir for having thought this one out.
DEHUMIDIFIER
If you have the potential of mold or have mold problems, then an Aprilaire in basement areas would be my choice because it works in cooler temperatures. I have a Danby dehumidifier where I need it to be quiet, and you should get a built in pump model by Delonghi for ease of use in other parts of your home.
CARPET CLEANER
If you have dust mites in your home and a bunch of carpeting, Reliable have come out with what I consider to be the first decent combination steam and vacuum cleaner in the Reliable Enviromate Tandem. It really does work well and I was tremendously skeptical as usual, but it is a truly quality product and the steam will clean and disinfect as it passes over your carpets as well kill the dust mites. This machine does not even have to switch back and forth to vacuuming as a separate operation so the steam stays hot.
So there is way more than $10K of products in the list above, but at least I have narrowed down your choices.
